Please note, Electric Assist bikes have special considerations when transporting. They are not suitable for trunk style (the type you strap to the car) bike carriers or older hitch racks with weight ratings of 40 pounds. They are also not able to be carried on most racks that carry 3 or more bikes (they are limited to 2 bikes only). We reserve the right to cancel any booking that cannot ensure proper transportation.

Crater Lake National Park

Our most popular destination for rentals is our beloved National Park right in our backyard. Crater Lake is arguably one of the best road bike adventures in the country, but has some serious considerations.

Crater Lake FAQ

Can you transport our bikes from Klamath Falls into the Park?

We have discontinued this service in 2025. The considerable drive time from our store made it difficult to focus on other aspects of our business, among other difficulties surrounding this service.

We do offer hitch style bike racks for rent, as well as tailgate pads for safely transporting bikes. We will help install these on your vehicle. For people traveling by rental car, we recommend a pickup truck and renting our tailgate pad to safely transport your rental bikes.

Please note that we will cancel your reservation if you cannot ensure safe transport, and we do charge for damages caused by transport.

What is the Ride like?

Crater Lake is arguably one of the best road bike rides in the United States. It is one of the most stunning roads that circumnavigates the lake with panoramic vistas every few miles.

The ride is hard, by most people’s measure, tackling 35 miles and 3500’ of elevation gain. If you do not have a lot of experience on a bike, we strongly recommend one of our Electric assist bikes. It still will require effort, but people of average fitness are able to ride it with careful attention to the battery level.

Most people take 3-5 hours to complete the ride, but some people draw it out up to 7- or 8-hour venture.

See the route here.

There is no off-road or trail option, this is open to car traffic, though once you get onto East Rim Drive, the traffic greatly decreases. The trails that exist within the park are strictly regulated for non-bicycle travel. While there is one small trail that is open to bikes, it’s not a trail we recommend checking out until your second or third visit.

What time of year is best for this ride?

Please note that Crater Lake gets 20-50 feet of snow per year! While they do an amazing job of clearing the roads, it can be as late as July before the entire rim is open. You can still do rides in May and June, though you may only get parts of West Rim Drive. This is still a great ride and very scenic, but it would be an out-and-back ride of less than 20 miles. Come September, the weather can be very unpredictable up there. We don’t recommend making long term bookings for September for this reason, however a week booking is still feasible.

For a good idea of when the road will open this year, refer to the chart of opening dates on Crater Lake’s Operating Hours & Seasons or simply call the ranger station at 541-594-3400.

Are E-Bikes allowed in the Park

Electric bikes are allowed anywhere you are allowed to ride a bicycle. Note that there are no trails to ride at Crater Lake, you are sharing the road with cars, so class I and III E-Bikes are generally allowed anywhere. Due to shifting legislation around the classification of these vehicles, it is best to check with the Park Rangers to make sure the bike you are riding is allowed.

This is an extremely difficult ride for an inexperienced rider. Electric bikes will ease that difficulty to some extent, but note that it’s still going to be very difficult. We highly recommend using your battery power sparingly. The advertised range of many E-Bikes do not take in to account the dramatic elevation changes.

Our rental bikes that have the option of a range extender are well suited for this ride, though we still recommend keeping a close eye on the battery level. We do not recommend any of our Mountain E-Bikes for this ride due to the inefficiency of the tires draining the battery quickly. We do not offer refunds based on the range of the battery.
