Pelican/Rye Gravel/MTB Loop
Challenging yet rewarding
This route has some very challenging climbing. But you will be rewarded with two of the best views in the basin. Pelican Butte at over 8000 in elevation offers amazing 360° views of the Cascades, Klamath lake and many mountain wilderness areas. The terrain you will find on this route covers a wide variety of fast swooping manicured gravel roads, as well as rough and rocky single track. So you will want to bring a bike that can do a little bit of everything. I typically recommend a cross-country bike, either a hardtail or full suspension. You will be passing very close to the Lake of the Woods Lodge and resort. I would highly recommend stopping to get a burger on your way by. And you can camp there as well. Or if you prefer you can camp at the four Mile lake campground. Have fun out there exploring our back yard.
Recommend Bicycle Type: Cross Country mountain bike. The 2” or larger tires will help with floatation on the dry pumice soil, as well as offer better traction and control for the rough and rowdy sections of this ride. The lower gearing generally found on mountain bikes will be a much appreciated feature when you find yourself climbing Pelican Butte to over 8000 feet. (You can thank us later)
Cross Country
These bikes are well equipped to handle those all day gravel rides. And when the gravel gets rough they have the suspension to smooth out the ride.
Trek Supercaliber 9.9 XTR
Practically made for this ride, the Trek Supercaliber will conquer everything this loop throws at it. With tire clearance aplenty, a comfortable suspension front and rear, disc brakes for reliable stopping, this bike will not let you down on this long ride. You can even add bikepacking bags to this bike to make an overnight excursion out of this ride.
