Lake of the Woods Loop from Klamath Falls

Let’s go Bikepacking!

This route is very similar to our “Lake of the Woods gravel loop”. With the addition of starting and stopping in Klamath Falls downtown. This route adds about 40 miles to the basic loop and is a great way to ride right from your door step into the great outdoors. Camping at about the half way point at Lake of the Woods or one of the dispersed sites near by makes this a great multi-day adventure. And depending on when you get to Lake of the Woods, the lodge has amazing meals. Which is just one less meal you have to pack and cook. Speaking of packing, a top tip would be to meet friends or family at camp and have them bring your camping gear. The sights, smells and sounds that you will experience on this bikepacking trip will make it one to remember.

Recommend Bicycle Type: Gravel bike with 32c or larger tires. There is about 5 miles where the road gets rough. If you are a skilled rider these sections should be ridable for you. There is a bypass using Clover Creek rd to get around the worst of this area. A Cross Country or hardtail mountain bike could be used also. During the dryer portions of the year some of the road surfaces are soft and would be better suited for a 2 inch wide tire. A Trek Checkpoint or Trek X-Caliber would be recommended depending on weather you prefer drop bars vs flat bars.

ADVENTURE

All day comfort and the ability to take the road less traveled.  An upright body position and wider tire clearances take the edge off of rough roads.

Cross Country

These bikes are well equipped to handle those all day gravel rides. And when the gravel gets rough they have the suspension to smooth out the ride.

Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 Driftless

Practically made for this ride, the Trek Checkpoint will conquer everything this loop throws at it. With tire clearance aplenty, a comfortable neutral position and disc brakes for reliable stopping, this bike will not let you down on this long ride. You can even add bikepacking bags to this bike to make an overnight excursion out of this ride.
